Finally the day arrived! Sunday 20 March the first colleagues arrived in Debre Zeit. Staff arrived from the four different wind directions in Ethiopia from the four field offices to spend some time together and to get to know more about ZOA and to meet with other ZOA colleagues. 60 staff joined from the program areas of Shire, Jijiga, Dollo Ado and Gambella, together with some support staff from Addis with the theme for the staff retreat ‘One Team, One Dream’.

The location Debre Zeit is approx a one hour drive from Addis and is idyllic situated between the surrounding hills and several lakes. The staff retreat was not only relaxing, although some of our colleagues initially interpreted the invitation for the staff retreat differently. During the morning program the focus was on getting to know ZOA better. ZOA’s overall strategy was presented (see as well the short movie on http://www.zoa-international.com/strategic-plan-2015-2018). But also our HR policies, fraud prevention and more beneficiary accountability under the Core Humanitarian Standards were discussed. With plenty of variation in presentations, many assignments in smaller groups and using ‘Hit The Nail on the Head’ to summarize the sessions, the morning program was an informative experience.

In the afternoon the program had a more social character. From the Netherlands a friend came over to take care of the team building activities. Although he has experience with organizing entertainment activities in holiday parks, this was a complete new experience for him. With a big diversity of ethnic groups in Ethiopia (f.i. 88 different languages are spoken within Ethiopia), also in our ZOA team we had a big variety of the different ethnic groups. The staff was able to get to know the other ZOA colleagues in a better way with traditional Dutch games like balloon kicking, a search around a lake, dodge ball, sailing a boat, open mic night and Who Is the Mole. We even tried the go karts in Debre Zeit (the only one in Ethiopia?). Fortunately the go karts had a limited speed, otherwise some accidents would have happened to some of our staff.

After almost a week with other ZOA staff there was one unanimous conclusion: next year again a staff retreat! One team, one dream!
