Building the Future
As a family we successfully completed the first 9 weeks in Gambella. Time to escape the heat and the busy working weeks in Gambella for two weeks of leave. For me, Remko, a good opportunity to look back to the first months. One of the activities which took me a lot of time and concerns was the construction of three schools. This year ZOA started the construction of school buildings at three locations close to the South Sudanese border. No easy task, as all three school locations are located far from Gambella town. So it is a logistic challenge to get all building materials and construction staff to the construction sites. The school in Pagak can be reached by tarmac road within two hours from Gambella town. The school in Burbe is situated 5 hours from Gambella and can only be reached by a bumpy dirt road. By far the biggest challenge is the school construction in Akobo, which can only be reached by the same bumpy dirt road and from there another 10 hours by boat. We aim to complete the schools in Pagak and Burbe in the coming month. Last month we handed over the school in Akobo.

On Friday 26 June our staff in Akobo organized the handing over of the school to the local government, after a long process of preparation, tendering and construction activities. ZOA wants that local authorities take ownership of the school, not ZOA. As NGO we are not responsible for providing education to the children in Akobo. This should be the responsibility of the government. Therefore we handed over the four class rooms and additional library block as soon as possible after completion of the construction to the local education bureau. A big group of people from the local government of the Akobo woreda joined the crowd, together with other interested inhabitants of the town, to see the official handing over ceremony. And with an official Ethiopian ceremony there are also many speeches. So every stakeholder who was involved in the construction of the school or who will be involved in the future school activities had the opportunity to speech. So it was my privilege to speak to the crowd about the realization of the school and that ZOA wants to build the future of Akobo. All speeches praised ZOA’s performance to build a school in such a remote area of Gambella state and were thankful that ZOA has not forgotten the kids in Akobo.

We also invited a group of children who will attend classes next school year in the new school building. They sang some traditional Ethiopian songs and performed some local dances. Good to see that the children were also enthusiastic that they would be able to go to a real classroom instead of sitting under the trees. With the completed school ZOA can hopefully contribute to a better future for the kids in Akobo.

Although the school has been handed over, there are still some things which need to be done before the new school year starts. We only handed over an empty school building. One of our donors, Unicef, will provide local government with the school furniture. ZOA needs to arrange all transportation of all furniture for the 4 classrooms from Gambella to Akobo, which will be another logistic challenge. Furthermore, in the design of the school insufficient attention was paid to the sanitary facilities around the school. The coming two months we have to arrange the construction of latrines next to the school buildings, so the children have access to safe and clean toilets while going to school. We already started with forming parent teacher associations, who will have a shared responsibility for supervision of the quality of education. We will organize a training to this parent teacher association how to organize this supervision in an effective way. So plenty of things to follow up on after I get back from my leave in Gambella…
