Vrijdag 5 juni was het World Environment Day. Voor ZOA in Gambella een mooie mogelijkheid om het belang van de natuur extra onder de aandacht te brengen. De bevolking van Gambella is zo vrij om meer dan 250.000 vluchtelingen te verwelkomen in hun mooie landschap, maar dit gaat vaak gepaard met een enorme aanslag op de natuur en de omgeving. In Bonga, vlakbij Gambella, heeft het vluchtelingenkamp dat in 2006 is gesloten een enorm groot litteken achtergelaten in het landschap. ZOA heeft daar een boomplant project die dit jaar alleen al 300.000 bomen zal planten in het kale landschap, waar jaren lang meer dan 10.000 vluchtelingen hebben huisgehouden.

1. World Environment Day in een vluchtelingenkamp

ZOA heeft daarom in de kampen verschillende activiteiten opgezet om de impact op de omgeving te verkleinen. Zoals eerder vermeld hebben we al ruim 20.000 houtbesparened kacheltjes uitgedeeld in twee bestaande kampen, en staan we op het punt om 12.000 huishoudens in het nieuwe Jewi kamp te voorzien van dergelijke stoves. Tevens hebben we training gegeven aan vluchtelingen en de lokale gemeenschap over het gebruik van mud bricks, stenen voor de bouw van huizen gemaakt van klei en gras, die de impact op de omgeving vermindert ten opzicht van traditionele bouwstijlen. Ook willen we in de verschillende kampen zogenaamde greenzones introduceren om kwetsbare natuur te beschermen tegen vernieling door de vluchtelingen. Misschien in combinatie met het vormen van ‘Ecoparks’ waar de vluchtelingen voor een stukje ontspanning naar toe kunnen gaan. Met paden, bankjes, speeltuintjes en informatie over de natuur.

2. Vluchtelingen en genodigde gasten bekijken het spektakel

Maar gister hebben we vooral gebruikt om de dialoog aan te gaan met de vluchteling in de kampen. Zo waren er culturele informatieve toneelstukjes, traditionele Zuid Soedanese dansen, demonstraties van milieuvriendelijke activiteiten van verschillende NGO’s en werden er traditionele spellen georganiseerd (voor degene die dachten dat zaklopen een oud-Hollands spel was, heeft het mis. Dit spel kent in Ethiopie ook al een oude traditie).

3. Een close finish voor Remko met zaklopen

Ook mochten de gasten aan het eind van de ceremonie een boompje planten. De dag werd goed bezocht door de vluchtelingen, vooral door de kinderen. Een beetje entertainment en muziek is een welkome afwisseling in het kampleven. Nu maar hopen dat de vluchtelingen verantwoorder om gaan met de omgeving.

Gister klommen ook al weer tientallen kinderen in de bomen om het spektakel beter te zien. En zo nu en dan hoorde je dan weer een tak kraken als er net een kind teveel op een tak zat. Net niet het geluid wat je wilt horen als je net midden in je speech zit over hoe we bewuster om moeten gaan met onze omgeving...

5. Ethiopie shirts doen het goed bij de Soedanezen

Yesterday we celebrated worldwide World Environment Day. This was a good opportunity for ZOA Gambella to raise awareness on environment protection. The host community of Gambella is opening its beautiful land to 250,000 refugees, but often this goes together with a big impact on the environment. Bonga refugee camp, approx. 40 kilometers from Gambella town, closed down in 2006, but left an enormous scar in the landscape. Some years ago ZOA started a reforestation project, which in this year will plant about 300,000 seedlings in the empty Bonga landscape, where only some years ago more than 10,000 refugees were living for many years.

ZOA started therefore in the camps different activities to reduce the impact on the environment. As described earlier, ZOA distributed more than 20,000 fuel saving stoves in two existing camps in Gambella and we are about to start the distribution of another 12,000 stoves in the new Jewi camp. Furthermore, we have given trainings on the preparation and use of mud bricks, a technique which further reduces the impact on the environment compared to traditional construction methods. ZOA also intends to introduce green zones in the camps to protect vulnerable nature from being cut by refugees. Maybe in combination with the creation of ‘Ecoparks’ where refugees can meet for some recreation. With footpaths, benches, a small playground for kids and information along the path with information about the environment.

But yesterday we mainly used to open the dialogue with the refugees. We showed cultural informative plays, traditional South Sudanese dances, demonstrations of NGOs how they create awareness on the environment in the camps and we had some traditional games.

At the end of the ceremony the guests had the opportunity to plant a seedling in a designated area in the camp. The activities were well visited by refugees, especially by the children. A little bit of entertainment and music is a welcome distraction in the camp life. Let’s hope that the refugees change their attitude against nature and start caring for their environment.

Yesterday some kids climbed in the trees to better see the spectacle. And now and then you heard the cracking of a branch if there were too many kids on it. Not really the sound you want to hear if you are in the middle of your speech how to take care of your environment in a better way.
